perseveration

Involuntary response looping

Perseveration is the uncontrollable repetition of a word, phrase, gesture, or thought.

In psychology and neurology, it describes when someone gets stuck—continuing a response or behavior even when it's no longer appropriate or useful: The patient showed perseveration, answering every question with the same phrase.

The term applies to both speech patterns and actions, often indicating brain injury, dementia, or certain developmental conditions.
