stereotypy

Purposeless repeated movements

Stereotypy is repetitive, seemingly purposeless movement or behavior—rocking, hand-flapping, pacing, or repeated vocalizations.

The term appears most often in clinical contexts describing autism, developmental disorders, or animals in captivity: The caged tiger exhibited stereotypy, walking the same circuit endlessly.

In psychiatry, stereotypy can also refer to persistent repetition of words or phrases.
