waiting rooms
Pre-appointment holding areas
Waiting rooms are spaces in offices, clinics, stations, and other facilities where people sit until they are called or until a scheduled event begins.
A doctor's office has a waiting room where patients await their appointments; a train station may have one where travelers pass time before departure.
The term evokes associations with boredom, anxiety, and the particular limbo of being between activities: I spent half the morning in the waiting room.
