churchwardens
Long clay pipes
Churchwardens are lay officials elected to manage the temporal affairs of a parish church—maintaining the building, handling finances, and assisting the clergy.
The term also refers to a type of long-stemmed clay tobacco pipe, supposedly favored by men who held this office: He sat smoking a churchwarden by the fire.
