chondrocyte

Cell in cartilage

A chondrocyte is a cell found in cartilage, responsible for producing and maintaining the cartilage matrix.

These cells sit in small cavities called lacunae and secrete the collagen and proteoglycans that give cartilage its resilient, flexible structure.

Damaged chondrocytes can lead to joint degeneration.
