autologous

Using one's own

Autologous describes biological material—usually tissue, cells, or blood—that comes from and returns to the same person.

The term appears most often in medical contexts: an autologous blood transfusion uses blood you donated earlier for your own later surgery, and autologous stem cell transplants harvest your own cells for reinfusion after chemotherapy.

The advantage of autologous procedures is that the body won't reject its own material.

The patient banked autologous blood before the operation.
