carbon tetrachloride

Ozone-depleting cleaner

Carbon tetrachloride is a colorless liquid chemical compound, historically used as a dry-cleaning solvent, fire extinguisher, and industrial degreaser.

Its toxicity to the liver and kidneys, plus its role in ozone depletion, led to bans on most uses by the late twentieth century.

The compound still appears in some industrial processes and as a laboratory reagent.
