liver damage
Cirrhosis precursor condition
Liver damage is injury to the liver that impairs its function, ranging from mild inflammation to severe scarring (cirrhosis) or failure.
Common causes include excessive alcohol consumption, viral hepatitis, fatty liver disease, and certain medications or toxins: Years of heavy drinking led to irreversible liver damage.
The liver can regenerate from minor damage, but chronic injury overwhelms this capacity.
