halothane

Volatile surgical sedative

Halothane is a general anesthetic administered by inhalation, widely used from the 1950s through the 1980s.

It largely replaced earlier volatile anesthetics like ether and chloroform because it was less flammable and caused less nausea.

Halothane has since been supplanted by newer agents with fewer side effects, particularly liver toxicity.
