checkering

Carved grip texture

Checkering is the process of cutting a crosshatched pattern of fine grooves into a surface, typically the grip of a firearm or tool handle, to improve traction.

The resulting diamond-shaped texture prevents slipping: The gunsmith added checkering to the pistol's wooden grips.

The pattern itself is also called checkering.
