chainfall

Manual lifting device

A chainfall is a manual hoisting device that uses a looped chain and geared mechanism to lift heavy loads.

The operator pulls one chain loop to raise or lower the load chain, with the gears providing mechanical advantage: We used a chainfall to pull the engine out of the truck.

Also called a chain hoist or chain block.
