substance theory
Substrate ontology doctrine
Substance theory is a philosophical view holding that reality consists of substances—entities that exist independently and persist through change while their properties vary.
A lump of clay remains the same substance whether shaped as a ball or a cube.
The theory addresses what makes a thing fundamentally itself beneath its changing qualities.
It contrasts with bundle theory, which denies any underlying substance exists apart from a collection of properties.
