case study

Teaching through example

A case study is a detailed examination of a single subject—a person, organization, event, or situation—used to draw broader conclusions or illustrate principles.

Common in business, medicine, psychology, and law: The professor assigned a case study on corporate restructuring.

As an adjective, it describes something worth such analysis: a case study in mismanagement.
