capuchins

Small New World monkeys

Capuchins are small, intelligent monkeys native to Central and South America, recognizable by the cap of dark fur on their heads that resembles a hood.

This distinctive marking gives them their name, which comes from the hooded robes worn by Capuchin friars.

They are among the most commonly used primates in behavioral research and were once popular as organ grinder monkeys and service animals.

The capuchins at the zoo were using sticks to extract treats from a puzzle box.
