bonobos

Matriarchal great apes

Bonobos are great apes native to the Congo Basin, closely related to chimpanzees but smaller and more slender.

They're notable among primates for their matriarchal social structure and use of sexual behavior—between any combination of sexes and ages—to defuse tension and strengthen bonds.

Along with chimpanzees, bonobos are humans' closest living relatives.
