spile

Barrel vent peg

A spile is a wooden peg or plug, especially one used to stop the vent hole in a barrel or cask.

It also refers to a small spout driven into a sugar maple to draw sap: We hammered spiles into the trees each spring.

In construction, spile can mean a heavy timber driven into the ground as a foundation pile.
