backhander
Corrupt secret payment
A backhander is a bribe or illicit payment, especially one given discreetly to secure favorable treatment: The contract went to whoever paid the biggest backhander.
The term is primarily British.
Separately, a backhander is a stroke made with the back of the hand—in tennis, a backhand shot; in fighting, a slap delivered with the knuckles facing forward.
