brown shrimp

Small coastal shellfish

Brown shrimp are small crustaceans found in shallow coastal waters, commercially important in the Gulf of Mexico and North Sea.

They're named for their brownish-gray color when raw, though like other shrimp they turn pink when cooked.

We bought a pound of fresh brown shrimp at the dock.

In British English, brown shrimp often refers specifically to the tiny *Crangon crangon*, prized for potted shrimp.
