trawl nets
Dragged fishing gear
Trawl nets are large, bag-shaped fishing nets designed to be dragged through the water behind a boat.
The net's wide mouth funnels fish into an increasingly narrow tail where they become trapped.
Bottom trawls scrape along the seafloor to catch groundfish like cod and shrimp; midwater trawls target schools swimming above the bottom.
The trawl net came up heavy with flounder.
