tippet

Hanging shoulder wrap

A tippet is a long, narrow piece of cloth worn draped over the shoulders, hanging down in front.

In ecclesiastical dress, clergy wear tippets as part of their vestments.

The word also refers to similar garments in academic or formal attire, and historically to a woman's fur shoulder covering: She wrapped her fox tippet against the cold.

In fly fishing, the tippet is the fine terminal section of leader attached to the fly.
