pique

Resentment from slights

Pique is a feeling of wounded pride or resentment, usually from a perceived slight: She left in a fit of pique.

To pique someone is to irritate or offend them this way.

But pique also means to stimulate or arouse: The headline piqued my curiosity.

The two senses connect through the idea of pricking—one wounds, the other awakens.
