botflies

Skin-burrowing insect pests

Botflies are parasitic flies whose larvae develop inside the bodies of mammals, including humans.

The adult fly deposits eggs on or near a host; the hatched larvae burrow into flesh and mature beneath the skin, creating painful swellings.

The human botfly, found in Central and South America, is particularly notorious.

Warble flies, which infest cattle, are a related group.
