secondary infection
Disease following disease
A secondary infection is an infection that develops during or after treatment for another infection.
The original illness or its treatment weakens the body's defenses, allowing new pathogens to take hold: She recovered from the flu but developed a secondary bacterial infection in her lungs.
Secondary infections often complicate hospital stays, where exposure to resistant organisms is common.
