tsetse flies

Sleeping sickness vectors

Tsetse flies are bloodsucking insects native to tropical Africa, known for transmitting sleeping sickness to humans and a similar disease to livestock.

The flies are larger than common houseflies and have a distinctive forward-folding wing pattern.

Their presence has historically limited cattle farming across much of sub-Saharan Africa.

Also spelled tsetse fly or simply tsetse.
