botfly

Maggot-laying insect pest

A botfly is a stout, hairy fly whose larvae develop as parasites in mammalian tissue.

Different species target different hosts—some burrow under the skin of cattle or horses, others infest rodents or deer.

The human botfly deposits eggs via mosquitoes; the larvae hatch from body heat and tunnel into flesh, creating painful, breathing boils that must grow for weeks before extraction.

The doctor removed a botfly larva from his arm.
