eyeworms

Larvae in eyes

Eyeworms are parasitic nematodes that infest the eyes of mammals, including humans.

The most common species affecting humans is *Loa loa*, transmitted by deer flies in Central and West Africa.

Victims may see the worm moving across the surface of the eye: The doctor extracted a live eyeworm from beneath the conjunctiva.

Also called African eye worm.
