bootleg tape
Illicit concert capture
A bootleg tape is an unofficial recording of a live performance, typically of a concert, circulated without authorization from the artist or record label.
Before digital formats, fans traded bootleg tapes of bands like the Grateful Dead or Led Zeppelin, capturing performances unavailable through official releases: I found a bootleg tape of their 1977 tour.
The term now applies to any unauthorized recording regardless of format.
