Warez is slang for pirated software, games, movies, or music distributed illegally online.
The term emerged in hacker and file-sharing communities, where the -z suffix signals underground culture: I found the warez on a sketchy FTP site.
The word is dated, peaking in the late 1990s when CD-burning and early peer-to-peer networks made digital piracy widespread.
