bluecoats

Northern Civil War troops

Bluecoats is a historical term for soldiers wearing blue uniforms, most often Union troops during the American Civil War: The bluecoats advanced on the Confederate position.

The term also referred to police officers, whose uniforms were traditionally blue.

Both uses are now dated, appearing mainly in historical contexts or period fiction.
