deputies

Authorized stand-ins appointed

Deputies are people appointed or elected to act on behalf of others.

A deputy sheriff assists or substitutes for a sheriff; deputies in this sense often carry law enforcement authority.

In some governments, elected legislators are called deputies.

More generally, a deputy is anyone designated to act as a substitute: She left her deputy in charge while traveling.
