Army of the Potomac
Eastern Union army
The Army of the Potomac was the principal Union force in the Eastern Theater during the American Civil War (1861–1865).
Based around Washington, D.C., it fought most of its major engagements against the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia.
The army changed commanders repeatedly before Ulysses S.
Grant took overall command of Union forces in 1864.
McClellan rebuilt the Army of the Potomac after Bull Run.
