binarization

Reducing to binary

Binarization is the process of converting something into a binary form—reducing it to two possible values or states.

In image processing, binarization converts a grayscale image to black and white: Binarization of the scanned document made the text easier to read.

The term appears in computing, statistics, and data analysis wherever continuous values must be reduced to yes/no, on/off, or 0/1 distinctions.
