Tart red fruit
Barberry is a thorny shrub of the genus *Berberis*, bearing small yellow flowers and clusters of tart red or purple berries.
The berries are used in cooking, particularly in Middle Eastern cuisine, where dried barberries add a sour note to rice dishes.
Some species are considered invasive in North America.
