Bayer process

Refining bauxite ore

The Bayer process is an industrial method for extracting alumina (aluminum oxide) from bauxite ore, developed by Austrian chemist Karl Bayer in 1888.

Bauxite is dissolved in sodium hydroxide solution under heat and pressure, impurities are filtered out, and pure alumina precipitates.

This alumina then feeds the Hall-Héroult process to produce metallic aluminum.

Nearly all commercial aluminum production begins with the Bayer process.
