terra-cotta

Reddish pottery material

Terra-cotta is a brownish-orange clay used for pottery, sculpture, and architectural ornament.

The material is fired but unglazed, giving it a distinctive earthy appearance.

Terra-cotta also names the color itself—a warm reddish-brown: terra-cotta roof tiles, a terra-cotta pot.

The word comes from Italian for "baked earth."
