totaling

Reaching a sum

Totaling means adding up to reach a sum: The bill came to $47, totaling tax and tip.

It also means calculating that sum: She spent the afternoon totaling receipts.

In American usage, totaling a car means wrecking it so completely that repair costs exceed its value—the insurance company "totals" it by declaring it a total loss.
