Ongoing accumulated count
A running total is a sum that updates continuously as new values are added: The spreadsheet keeps a running total of expenses.
Unlike a final total calculated once at the end, a running total reflects the cumulative amount at any given point: By noon, the running total of donations had reached fifty thousand dollars.
