ethers
Old surgical anesthetics
Ethers are a class of organic compounds in which an oxygen atom connects two carbon-containing groups.
The most familiar is diethyl ether, historically used as an anesthetic—the patient was put under with ether.
In cryptocurrency, ether is the native token of the Ethereum blockchain, often called simply ETH.
The plural distinguishes these technical meanings from the singular ether, the luminiferous medium once believed to fill space.
