Whig Party
Pre-Republican American faction
The Whig Party was an American political party active from the 1830s to the 1850s, formed in opposition to Andrew Jackson and the Democratic Party.
Whigs generally favored a strong Congress, protective tariffs, and internal improvements like roads and canals.
The party produced four presidents—Harrison, Tyler, Taylor, and Fillmore—but collapsed over slavery disputes, with most Northern Whigs joining the new Republican Party.
