Martin Van Buren

Martin Van Buren was the eighth president of the United States, serving from 1837 to 1841.

A New York politician and key architect of the Democratic Party, he was the first president born an American citizen rather than a British subject.

His presidency coincided with the Panic of 1837, an economic crisis that damaged his reputation and cost him reelection.
