Republic of Texas
Lone Star sovereignty
The Republic of Texas was an independent nation that existed from 1836 to 1846, formed after Anglo-American settlers and Tejanos declared independence from Mexico.
Following the famous defeat at the Alamo and subsequent victory at San Jacinto, Texas operated as a sovereign republic with its own president, currency, and foreign relations before annexation by the United States.
The term occasionally surfaces in discussions of Texas identity and, more rarely, among fringe secession movements.
