Jacobites

Exiled dynasty supporters

Jacobites were supporters of the exiled Stuart king James II and his descendants after the Glorious Revolution of 1688 deposed him in favor of William and Mary.

The name comes from Jacobus, Latin for James.

Jacobite risings challenged British rule, most famously the 1745 rebellion led by Bonnie Prince Charlie.

The term now appears mainly in historical contexts: Jacobite sympathies, Jacobite uprising.
