Walkmans

Sony tape portables

Walkmans is the common plural of Walkman, Sony's portable cassette player that became synonymous with personal audio in the 1980s.

The trademark became generic for any portable tape player with headphones: Kids today have no idea what Walkmans were.

Sony preferred "Walkman personal stereos" as the plural, but English speakers ignored this.
