ghetto blasters
Large portable radios
Ghetto blasters are large portable stereos with powerful speakers, popular in the 1980s for playing music loudly in public spaces.
Also called boomboxes.
The term references urban neighborhoods where the devices were associated with hip-hop culture and street life: kids carrying ghetto blasters on their shoulders.
The word carries racial and class connotations that make boombox the neutral alternative.
