Mixtapes are compilations of songs recorded onto a single cassette tape, CD, or digital file.

Originally, people made mixtapes by recording tracks from the radio or copying from other tapes—a personalized selection for a road trip, a party, or a romantic gesture: He made her a mixtape of love songs.

In hip-hop, a mixtape is an unofficial release showcasing an artist's work, often featuring freestyles over existing beats.

The term persists even though the cassette tape has largely disappeared.
