Guernica
Basque massacre site
Guernica is a town in the Basque region of northern Spain, bombed by German and Italian warplanes during the Spanish Civil War in 1937.
The attack on civilians became a symbol of the horrors of modern warfare.
Pablo Picasso's monumental painting of the same name, depicting the bombing's anguish and chaos, made Guernica synonymous with anti-war protest: The photograph was our generation's Guernica.
