Bilbao
Guggenheim's Spanish home
Bilbao is the largest city in the Basque Country of northern Spain, an industrial port on the Nervión River.
Once known primarily for shipbuilding and steel, it transformed its image in the 1990s with the opening of the Guggenheim Museum, whose titanium curves became an icon of urban renewal: The Bilbao effect inspired cities worldwide to bet on landmark architecture.
