pay phone

Vanishing street fixture

A pay phone is a public telephone that requires payment—traditionally coins, later phone cards or credit cards—to make calls.

Once ubiquitous on street corners, in hotel lobbies, and at gas stations, pay phones have largely disappeared with the rise of mobile phones.
