Sandinistas
Leftist Nicaraguan guerrillas
The Sandinistas are members of the Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN), a Nicaraguan political movement that overthrew the Somoza dictatorship in 1979 and governed until 1990.
Named after Augusto César Sandino, a revolutionary figure from the 1930s, the Sandinistas pursued socialist policies and became a flashpoint in Cold War politics, facing U.S.-backed Contra insurgents throughout the 1980s.
The FSLN returned to power in 2007 under Daniel Ortega.
The Sandinistas redistributed land to peasant cooperatives.
