Contras
Anti-Sandinista guerrillas
The Contras were right-wing guerrilla forces who fought against Nicaragua's Sandinista government in the 1980s.
The name comes from Spanish for "against" or "counter-revolutionaries." They became notorious in American politics through the Iran-Contra affair, when the Reagan administration secretly funded them with proceeds from illegal arms sales to Iran. (Lowercase contras means things that oppose.)
